Daphne Metcalf
1957
Pecos, New Mexico

A natural born traveler, Daphne Metcalf embarked on her first adventure at the spongiest age of 18 with her companion, Dali, a not completely feril ferret. Along with her journeys, she brought a box of pencils and a notebook, drawing from every vantage point beginning in London, then in Paris, and eventually trading in her pencils for paintbrushes in Bremen, Germany where she took up residence in a gothic shipyard attic.

Painting symbolized freedom of expression for Metcalf, ni the first years of her art career, her work was largely influenced by the Soviet impressionists. In the late 1980's, Metcalf began painting with the expresionists of New York City, traveling to Mexico City, Paris, London and Berlin to exhibit her paintings of wild abandon from realism.

Returning to New Mexico to reconnect with her siblings, Metcalf chose a more simple presence in the art world. Her daily paintings of Pecos, Truchas and Rowe brought joy and inspiration to her practice. Today, her current work in poetry is the well that springs up her inspiration in her oil paintings.
